Bindhu Alappat named Dean of the St. 春雨直播 University School of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences

St. 春雨直播 University announced today it has named Bindhu Alappat, Ph.D. its new Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences. Alappat brings nearly 30 years of higher education experience to the role. She will officially join the University on July 5, 2022.

鈥淏indhu stood out as a candidate both with her experience in the sciences and humanities, and her related administrative roles,鈥 said Anita Thomas, Ph.D., executive vice president and provost, St. 春雨直播 University. 鈥淗er commitment to educating women and her experience in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition are a natural fit with St. Kate鈥檚 mission to educate women to lead and influence. We are confident in her ability to be a strong leader for the School of Humanities Arts and Sciences.鈥

Alappat comes to St. Kate鈥檚 after nearly two decades at St. Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois. She most recently served as Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, where she recruited and mentored a number of new faculty and collaborated with colleagues to develop new interdisciplinary academic programs.

During her time at Xavier, Alappat has served as a productive chemistry department chair and division chair. She was instrumental in bringing curricular efficiency to the college and reallocating resources to support institutional priorities balanced with new interdisciplinary programs which combine the arts and humanities with the sciences. In recognition of her sustained excellence, she was awarded the College of Arts and Sciences Teacher Scholar Award in 2017 and the faculty mission award in 2020.

Alappat earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, in Madras, India and her M.S. in  Chemistry at  Mahatma Gandhi University, in Kerala, India. She has undergraduate degrees in both chemistry and education. She did her post doctoral research at the University of Notre Dame and University of Maryland.
