What is America Reads?

America Reads is a literacy  program dedicated to ensuring all young people are academically prepared. St. Kate's ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s from various programs are employed as tutors for schools and community organizations working with ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s as tutors to help them achieve their academic goals. Through transportation provided by St. Kate's, tutors go in groups to the community partner locations. Community Work and Learning supports the tutors' professional development through ongoing training sessions, events, and reflection sessions that take place each semester. Through America Reads, we work with the following community partners in the Twin Cities:

FAQs about the America Reads program

  • How much does the America Reads program positions pay?
    • New America Reads tutors and mentors are paid $15/hr.
  • How many hours per week are tutors at a community partner site?
    • The number of hours tutors are on site depends on their schedule, ´ºÓêÖ±²¥â€™s preferred amount of hours, and the capacity of our community partner sites. Typically, tutors work a minimum of 5 hours per week.
  • How do tutors get to the community partner sites?
    • Transportation is provided for all America Reads tutors through the use of the St. Kate’s vans.
  • How long do the positions last?
    • America Reads positions are a minimum of one semester long with the goal of each tutor staying on for at least one academic year or more.
  • Who is eligible?
    • Positions are open to all St. Kate’s ´ºÓêÖ±²¥s in both the College for Women and Graduate College, but generally draw from the incoming first year class.
  • How do I apply?
    • America Reads tutor and van driver positions can be found on the Career Development Website under the button titled: "KatieCareer by Handshake - ´ºÓêÖ±²¥ login". Use "America Reads" as a search term to find the positions.
