On Tuesday, February 6, Minnesota State Senator and St. ֱ University alumna Erin Murphy MAOL’05 was elected majority leader by the DFL party, following the announcement that Senator Kari Dziedzic was stepping away from the role. Murphy’s first day as majority leader begins on Monday, February 12, with the start of the 2024 legislative session.
Murphy previously served 12 years in the Minnesota House of Representatives, and ran for governor in 2018. She was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2006, and was re-elected to represent District 64A in 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014.
Since completing her Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership degree in 2005, Murphy has stayed connected to St. Kate’s. In 2018, she delivered the keynote address at winter Commencement. Serving as an adjunct nursing professor, she has engaged in ֱ discussions in and outside the classroom, touching on her background both in healthcare and politics.
“It usually takes women seven or eight times of being asked before they think about running,” Murphy told St. Kate’s ֱs at 2017 Day at the Capitol. “It’s a powerful place to make change, to make a difference. We need more voices that look like you and me — so consider this one of your asks.”
